Stara Škola is a beautifully designed restaurant, thoughtfully curated. What makes it even more charming is how the style and history of the old building—formerly a school, which gives the place its name—have been respectfully preserved and integrated into the overall atmosphere. The cuisine is an appealing blend of contemporary Istrian and Mediterranean influences, with a clear focus on high-quality local ingredients. We ordered a bit of everything and genuinely appreciated the creativity behind the dishes. That said, a couple of items fell slightly short of expectations. The “lasagnetta” was less remarkable than expected, and the desserts—priced at €9—could have been better in terms of flavor and execution. I especially love bergamot, so I was excited to try the bergamot ice cream, but it ended up being a bit disappointing. The wine list offers a good selection, though ironically the specific wines we wanted to order were not available at the time. Service was very professional—attentive without being intrusive—which contributed greatly to the overall experience. Even in November, the atmosphere was lovely, and I can only imagine how wonderful the garden and terrace must be during the warmer months. All in all, it was an excellent experience, and we will certainly return.

A true homage to everything that is right in Istrian cuisine. All the classical elements there from the best olive oil to the catch of the day; everything beautifully presented in an intimate, yet inviting atmosphere. Don't let the unassuming outside fool you, this is a place to remember. The cocktails are great, too.

Beautiful dinner after a long day of biking. We had the pasta with truffles, ćevapčići, a salad, and the house red wine. The portions were larger than we could eat and you could taste the care that went into each dish. The owner was welcoming, hospitable, and made us laugh (which was not an easy thing to do, given how tired we were!). The patio seating was lovely as well. Thank you!

A true culinary highlight in the heart of Istria. The truffle pasta was the best we’ve had in years – rich, perfectly balanced, and unforgettable. The carpaccio and fresh garden salad were excellent starters, followed by beautifully prepared steak and lamb, both cooked to perfection. The service deserves special mention: warm, attentive, and multilingual, making us feel welcome throughout the evening. Combined with the authentic atmosphere, this restaurant offers an experience that celebrates the very best of Istrian cuisine. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates outstanding food and genuine hospitality.

If it weren't sad,it'd be funny. We are local and once I went there with my sister so I wanted to take my husband out for his birthday. And so we went. He had beefsteak with funghi, my daughter gnocchi with boskarin and I had veal with gnocchi. That was good. Beefsteak was mediocre. But waitresses are like I have never seen before. 3 Slovenian ladies were sitting next to us OUTSIDE on the terrace and the waitress said that she's sorry but it's not supposed to be smoking there. With ashtray on every table, outside. What? After we ate,the waitress asked us if we want something sweet. Like dessert. We refused because we were full. I said it's my husband's birthday and maybe later. We are full. She then brought A SHOT GLASS,the one for schnapps with a candle in it and put it infront of my husband with "happy birthday from all of us". We started laughing because we couldn't belive she didn't even cut a small piece of house cake or one pancake to put candle on it. A small candle in a shot glass. Better she didn't bring anything than to embarrass herself and the restaurant. It was nice she congratulated him but not like this. You don't do it like this. Oh,and they charge coperto and the bread she just brings at the table, without asking. Rip-off. So you end up paying around 8-9€ more for something nobody else charges here. We left the tip because the food was good but we won't come again.

This restaurant never disappoints! Every visit is a true culinary experience. The scallops with truffles as a starter are simply divine – delicate, rich in flavor, and perfectly balanced. The baked fish is outstanding, cooked to perfection with incredible taste and freshness. To finish, the pistachio soufflé with ice cream is absolutely top-notch – light, flavorful, and the perfect ending to a memorable meal. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates fine dining and consistency in quality.

Food Review

Google Reviews
The food at Konoba Buščina is excellent, no doubt about it. However, the ratio between the main dish and the side dishes is completely off. Portions are small when it comes to the main meat or fish, while the sides are overly generous—almost overwhelming. Considering the portion sizes, the prices are definitely above average. If they focused on serving smaller sides and more substantial portions of the main course, the experience would be fantastic. Great quality, just needs a bit more balance on the plate.

We stayed at guesthouse as a family of four. Everything was perfect, clean accommodation and beautiful swimming pool that kids have enjoyed. Restaurant Konoba Pijero is one of the best restaurants we visited in Istria and we visited quite a few as we are coming every year to this region. Chef Jan pays so much attention to every dish and everything is absolutely perfect. I would especially recommend truffle pasta, the best one I have ever tried and fiorentina steak was also amazing. If you would like something sweet, you must try bijela torta - mascarpone, white chocolate and truffles. Staff is great and very attentive. I recommend both accommodation and Konoba Pjero - in addition to pleasant stay and amazing food, location is great too if you want to visit nearby vineries - Kabola, Kozlovic, San Mauro, Bastian, brewery San Servolo, old cities such as Groznjan, Buje, Motovun and Umag.

Arrived without reservation because they didn't answer on the phone number listed, but the tables on the terase had "reserved" cards on them, so I recommend being more persistant. The guests that arrived after us were seated inside (also not bad, but the vibes in the garden are much nicer). The food was great, the waiter too, professionall, but not annoying. The ravioli as an appetiser was delicious, I shared it with my partner, but we agreed that when we come again, we'll just have a plate each with some salad and call it a meal! In addition to the ordered appetiser we got their homemade bread and olive oil which was amazing! The tagliata as the second course was well prepared and both the potatoes and the grilled vegetables were tasty (those were the side dishes that are included in the price of the main course). My partner had the turkey breast with tartufi and it was tasty aswell, especially if you like the strong taste of the istrian mushroom and the meat wasn't dry at all. With all listed, a local beer, a Pašareta and a salad, the bill came out to be 75 euros. Only thing I resent is that in the backyard were we sat, there is a summer house, where locals gathered and drank beer from store. It was disturbing because of their dog that was running under our table non-stop😅 Oh, and the fact we were too full to try any of the desserts. But we'll make up for it, hopefully soon!😁

We were here three times in a row during our stay because everything was just right. Each time we were given a warm and extremely friendly welcome by the staff, so that we felt welcome and completely at ease from the very first minute. The white truffle that we ate deserves a special mention - simply fantastic! The quality and taste were first-class and absolutely recommendable. You can taste that they cook with passion and high-quality ingredients. The price-performance ratio is also excellent. You get excellent cuisine at fair prices. This restaurant is a must for anyone who wants to experience genuine Istrian hospitality and excellent food. We will definitely be back!

Nestled in the picturesque town of Buje in the heart of Istria, Konoba Pizzeria Aquarius effortlessly blends rustic charm with top-notch Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. The moment you enter, the friendly staff and cozy atmosphere create a welcoming setting. Their menu is an homage to the best of the Mediterranean - fresh, flavorful, and brimming with life. However, an important piece of advice for the management of Aquarius is to consider eliminating the couvert charge. Charging for bread, butter, olives or any other appetizer that customers didn't specifically order, can create an unwelcome surprise when the bill arrives. It could create a perception of hidden charges which may deter potential customers. These costs should be absorbed into the pricing of the main dishes (in pizzerias/konobas most definitely) as more transparency in pricing would enhance the overall dining experience and uphold the restaurant's ethos of warm hospitality. Despite this, the entire experience at Konoba Pizzeria Aquarius was extraordinary. The service, food, and ambiance all come together to offer an unforgettable dining experience. I left with a contented heart and a satisfied palate, looking forward to my next visit. Highly recommended!

We had a very good dinner here. We started with a cold seafood platter that included tuna carpaccio, anchovies, octopus salad, shrimp, and a seafood pâté. Everything was fresh, with the tuna being the favorite. The scallops were served in their shells with olive oil and lemon, nicely cooked. The main was a whole baked fish with potatoes, zucchini, and cherry tomatoes. The fish was fresh and tender, the vegetables flavorful, though the potatoes could have been crisper. The kids enjoyed pasta with truffles and a platter of cheeses and fresh cut prosciutto. Fresh salads on the side were simple and light. Service was friendly and helpful, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed.

Excellent family owned restaurant with great service, food, and brick oven Neapolitan style pizza! Atmosphere is simple, modern, and casual. This is not your typical old, traditional Istrian konoba. It’s more like a modern pizzeria with a varied menu including traditional Istrian favorites. The gourmet pizza menu is very unique and with many great choices! It was hard to decide, so they were kind enough to make a half and half pizza for me. It was excellent! Highly recommended. Important note: Pizza is only available after 1pm and they are currently closed on Wednesdays.

If you’re heading home from vacation and taking the scenic road through Istria - or ducking off the highway a few exits early - do yourself a favor: stop here for your last truly local meal before Slovenian, Italian and so on land of fast-service gas stations take over. This unassuming spot, with its covered outdoor seating, serves exactly what you need after a week of relax: simple, rustic dishes where rustic translates to garlic, onions, or both - and plenty of flavor. From perfectly grilled ćevapčići to creamy blitva (that green bowl in the pictures) or a steaming bowl of maneštra s bobićima (corn and bean soup), it’s honest food that tastes like someone’s grandmother still runs the kitchen. Pro tip: Pair that soup with a glass of Teran (pour it, all in) - the deep, earthy local red wine - and watch your humble bowl of beans and corn transform into a galactic-level culinary experience. Trust me, you’ll remember it long after crossing the border. With Google search, Maps and AI at your fingertips, you have no excuse not to find it. Next time you’re passing by, stop. Sit. Order. Thank me later.

Highly recommend! We ate here earlier this week and had a wonderful (and plentiful) mixed grill. The tagliatelle al tartufo was so good, our eldest daughter wanted to come again. This time on a Saturday, so we could have the odojak (suckling pig roasted on a spit all day) which they only serve once a week (no reservation needed). In one word: wow! It was juicy, it was crispy, it was delicious! And (almost) too much for the two of us. We didn't have room for desert, but our daughters did. After coffee, the excellent English speaking waitress offered us a schnapps on the house, she was so kind and helpful, ad was her lovely colleague. This is not a place where you find many tourists, it's a simple konoba next to the (not very busy) road mainly frequented by locals. We know why. Loved it!

Summary: The best stake I have tried, excellent service and an amazing atmosphere! Well deserved five stars✨ Both the food and the staff were above expectations. We had a full-course meal, led by tartar as a starter (house specialty, worth trying!). It was followed by soup and a wagyu steak that exceeded my expectations. Great food was rounded off with proficient recommendations of the staff (please try Toma's red wine and house deserts!) An honest and warm recommendation from our side for the restaurant and Ante :)

We had great dinner. We started with an octopus salad and charcuterie board of local meat and cheese. We continued with great steak and finished with pistachio soufflé. We also enjoyed their home wine. We liked their Malvazija so much that we had two bottles at dinner and bought couple of bottles to take home. We visited at the time of their local event and there was concert held just in front of the restaurant. It was quite loud on the terrace but we wanted it that way. Service was nice, pleasant to talk. Atmosphere inside of the restaurant was quiet, calm and the outside loud music didn’t disturb the inside.
